Operational Flexibility for Cost Savings
Jet aircraft flying into Auckland or Christchurch require an operational alternate in the event they are unable to land at their planned destination. Ohakea is a Royal New Zealand Air Force base in the lower North Island. Under agreement with BARNZ, Ohakea offers an excellent wide body alternate for BARNZ members.
Ohakea as an Alternate
Nominating Ohakea allows BARNZ member airlines to carry less fuel, and burn less carbon, than nomination of either Christchurch or Auckland Airports for services to New Zealand. Ohakea is approximately mid-way between Auckland and Christchurch, which delivers a reduced flight distance of 368 kms.
Airlines who nominate Ohakea for services to New Zealand share costs of nomination on a use basis. For all users, costs of nomination are substantially less than fuel savings made. Nomination of Ohakea is only available for BARNZ member airlines, and is available within hours of air traffic control availability.
What Aircraft Size Can Land In Ohakea?
The 2,447-metre Ohakea runway can accommodate all aircraft sizes including Boeing B737, B757, B767, B787, B747 and Airbus A320, A321, A340, A350 up to the A380 Code F aircraft.
