Planning Ahead for the
FUTURE OF AVIATION
Aviation is critical to New Zealand, delivering economic prosperity and social wellbeing.
Our viability as a competitive long-haul destination and exporter, our capacity to import goods and the opportunity for New Zealanders to stay connected and live globally are all reliant on successfully transitioning our aviation system to low emission fuels or renewable energy.
Global Alignment & Local Action

Aviation is acknowledged throughout the world as one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise. New Zealand is more socially and economically dependent on the aircraft that fly to, from and within our country than most other nations in the world. At the same time, aviation is changing. Internationally, airlines are committing to emissions reduction.
BARNZ airline members are also members of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). IATA and its members recognise the need to reduce aviation carbon emissions and are leading efforts in this area. For example, IATA airline members, have committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This date aligns with the requirements of the New Zealand Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Act. You can find out more on the work IATA and its members (which includes BARNZ) are doing here. You can also see what our airport partners in New Zealand are doing here.

Partnering for a Greener Future
BARNZ is a member of Sustainable Aviation Aotearoa (SAA), a public-private partnership that provides advice and coordination to accelerate the decarbonisation of New Zealand’s aviation sector. You can find out more about SAA and its role here.
You can see examples of our proactive advocacy work on sustainability in our joint submission with our partners IATA and the New Zealand Airports Association to the draft Emissions Reduction Plan for New Zealand for 2025-2030 available here.
